Snapshot of Oakland History: aftermath of the 1991 Firestorm This historic blaze was the equivalent of a 108 alarm fire. 400 engine companies, including firefighters from Oregon to Nevada assisted local agencies in containing the firestorm. Today, in addition to a new hills firestation,  firefighters routinely use extensive wildland firefighting. In addition, the outlets on all fire hydrants have become standard, ensuring all agencies from various communities can access the hydrants with their gear.  In 2008, a brush fire started in the exact location, but due to the new measures was quickly contained without any structural damage.
