Real Estate and Homes for Sale in Montclair Oakland, CA

Considering buying real estate in Oakland’s Montclair area? The Montclair District of Oakland is a quaint village nestled in the hills above Piedmont and adjacent to Highway 13. In the early 1900’s, Montclair was known as an artist’s enclave and mountainous weekend retreat for affluent San Franciscans who wanted to escape their city’s fog. Today, Montclair is known for its cozy setting, a perfect place to stroll while shopping, having coffee or sharing a meal at one of the village’s many independent neighborhood restaurants.

Montclair Location

Most of Montclair is nestled in the hills above scenic Highway 13. Homes in Montclair are located along windy and occasionally steep streets. Living here, you’ll be surrounded by pine and eucalyptus trees, with a cozy village just minutes away.  Real estate in Montclair attracts many people who like a sense of privacy, as the homes in upper Montclair are typically without sidewalks and one rarely sees one’s neighbors.  The lower portions of Montclair are more mildly sloped and you can easily access Montclair Village from the walking trail at the top of LaSalle Ave.

The Neighborhood Feel of Montclair

Oakland’s Montclair area has a warm, small town feel and is a fun place to hang out.  Montclair includes several of the highest ranked public schools in Oakland.  Families living in Montclair are typically assigned to Montclair Elementary, Thornhill Elementary, Joaquin Miller Elementary and Montera Middle schools.  These good schools attracts many families who picnic in Montclair Park and play soccer with the Montclair Soccer League for boys and girls at Shepherd Canyon.  In the nearby Sibley Regional Park, above Skyline Boulevard, there are miles of trails for the serious hiker and biker, plus off-leash dog walking trails.  There are two swim clubs, a library, and Montclair’s par 3 pitch and putt golf course.  Residents can also enjoy the Montclair Farmer’s Market every Sunday, year-round, rain or shine.

Home Prices in Montclair

Home styles and real estate for sale in Oakland’s Montclair vary widely. In fact, there is no one architectural aesthetic- you can find everything from rustic cottages, to classic Tudors, to Mid-Century Moderns with walls of glass.  On the north side of Montclair, you can find some early 1900 homes. These few remaining properties of rich “summering” San Franciscans are eclectic to say the least.
